Dozens injured and thousands evacuated in Croatia wildfire

A fast-moving wildfire that broke out near Lokva Rogoznica on Croatia's Adriatic coast spread into the tourist town of Omis, killing at least one person, injuring dozens and forcing about 1,200 residents and tourists to evacuate. The fire, which burned through roughly 1,000 hectares in about four hours, prompted more than 300 firefighters to respond, with several people hospitalized in life-threatening condition in Split. Similar wildfires this week also forced evacuations in Germany's Gey village near the Belgian border, in France's Landes region, and in Greece's Halkidiki region, amid a broader summer of heatwaves and drought across Europe. French authorities said nearly 500 people have been arrested on suspicion of starting wildfires in the country since the start of the summer.
