Israel charges settler over killing of Palestinian involved in Oscar-winning West Bank film

Israeli prosecutors have charged settler Yinon Levy (also spelled Yinon Levi) with reckless manslaughter over the July 2025 shooting death of Palestinian activist Odeh Hathaleen (also spelled Awdah Hathaleen) in the occupied West Bank. Hathaleen, a teacher and father of three, had appeared in the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land. According to the indictment, Levy fired during a confrontation that arose after settlers operated an excavator in the village of Umm al-Khair, hitting Hathaleen, then fired a second shot into the air; Levy has previously denied firing the fatal shot and says he will contest the charges. Israeli rights group B'Tselem said this is the first time an Israeli has been indicted for killing a Palestinian in the West Bank in nearly three years. The charges also include armed trespassing and malicious property damage; Levy was previously sanctioned by the UK in 2024 and had been sanctioned by the US under the Biden administration, though those US sanctions were later lifted under President Trump.
