Four Palestinians and two Israelis killed in West Bank shooting

A shooting in the West Bank village of Tal (also reported as Tell) left four Palestinians and two Israelis dead, marking the deadliest single incident in the territory in months, followed by settler arson attacks on two mosques and other property in nearby villages. Accounts of the initial clash differ: Palestinians say residents confronted Jewish settlers attacking them and that Israeli soldiers then opened fire, while the Israeli military says it responded to reports of an attack on hikers and that a Palestinian took a security guard's weapon and killed him before being killed by soldiers, with a soldier also killed. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would act with full force, and he and Defence Minister Israel Katz announced plans to demolish the shooter's family home and speed up legalization of settler outposts. In the following days settlers set fire to a mosque under construction in Qusra and spray painted the word revenge on its walls, and burned another mosque in the village of Kour, while the Israeli military said it sent troops to investigate and carried out raids and arrests it described as counter-terrorism operations. The United Nations says 1,114 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the Gaza war began, mostly by Israeli forces, with at least 35 deaths attributed to settler attacks, while 41 Israelis have been killed in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations in the same period.
