The extension keeps him under contract through 2029-30.\n\nThe agreement arrived on the eve of the 2026-27 season, continuing what has been a busy offseason of roster news for Minnesota. The Timberwolves have already sent two-thirds of their frontcourt out in a deal for LaMelo Ball, been linked to LeBron James in the so-called \"White Board\" saga, and landed Jonathan Kuminga, who chose Minnesota over the Lakers.\n\nFor McDaniels, the structure of the deal is notable. By signing a one-year extension rather than a longer-term one, he secures an additional $40 million guaranteed while still protecting his upside for future, potentially larger paydays down the line. The move was reported by ESPN's Shams Charania, with details believed to have come from McDaniels' agent, Nima Namakian.\n\nThe extension signals the Timberwolves' intent to keep their core together even as the roster shifts around it, giving McDaniels long-term security without locking either side into a traditional multiyear structure.","published_at":"2026-10-21T00:20:15.583659+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Why Jaden McDaniels and the Timberwolves agreed to a rare extension","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7706739/2026/10/20/jaden-mcdaniels-timberwolves-extension-2/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NBA News: Timberwolves Jaden McDaniels inks $40M extension","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nba-news-timberwolves-jaden-mcdaniels-064917839.html"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Timberwolves agree to 1-year, $40M extension with McDaniels","url":"https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/50223341/timberwolves-agree-1-year-40m-extension-mcdaniels"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Jaden McDaniels, Timberwolves reportedly agree to $40M extension","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/breaking-news/article/jaden-mcdaniels-timberwolves-reportedly-agree-to-40m-extension-014434923.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Wolves give Jaden McDaniels a $40 million contract extension","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/wolves-jaden-mcdaniels-40-million-015902151.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Jaden McDaniels, Timberwolves reportedly agree to one-year $40 million extension for 2029-30","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/jaden-mcdaniels-timberwolves-reportedly-agree-022037370.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Timberwolves Add a Year to Jaden McDaniels’ Contract","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/timberwolves-add-jaden-mcdaniels-contract-024345985.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Timberwolves lock up rising star with $40 million deal ahead of NBA season","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/timberwolves-lock-rising-star-40-030803153.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Jaden McDaniels agrees to contract extension with Timberwolves.
