The wide receiver left San Francisco's 23-17 win over the Commanders early after aggravating his Achilles, and the team watched its 20-point lead nearly vanish without him.
Mike Evans headed to the locker room in the second quarter of Monday night's game against Washington after aggravating the Achilles injury that had already kept him out of practice during the week. San Francisco held on for a 23-17 win, but the offense sputtered once Evans was gone, nearly blowing a 20-point lead in the process.
The diagnosis depends on who you ask. Kyle Shanahan called it Achilles tendinitis after the game and said he doesn't plan to have Evans undergo further testing, adding that he's hopeful the 33-year-old can play Sunday against the Falcons and that this isn't viewed as a long-term issue. But a conflicting report from NBC Sports Bay Area suggested the Achilles tendon remained intact while the team was bracing for Evans to miss at least next week's trip to Atlanta.
Either way, Brock Purdy may need to lean on someone else at receiver in the short term. Evans has been San Francisco's top target this season, and how the 49ers move the ball without him will be worth watching heading into their matchup with the Falcons.
