49ers survive Commanders rally to stay unbeaten at 6-0

San Francisco dominated early, then had to grind out a win as Washington stormed back in the second half.

The 49ers took control early, building a big first-half lead that looked like it might turn into a laugher. The Commanders had other ideas, clawing back into the game with a furious second-half rally that put the outcome in doubt.

San Francisco held on anyway, closing out the win to move to 6-0 and keep its spot atop the NFC. It was not a clean performance. Both ESPN and The Athletic noted the 49ers were banged up, and the team's depth is starting to be tested even as the record stays spotless.

For Washington, it is another frustrating finish. The Commanders had real chances to complete the comeback but came up short, and they now head into their bye week still searching for a signature win instead of another near-miss.

San Francisco's defense made enough stops late to deny the rally, while the offense did just enough after halftime to protect the early advantage. The Athletic framed it plainly: the 49ers still look like the best team in the conference, battered or not, while the Commanders leave with plenty to fix before they return from the bye.
