Orioles hire Jared Banner as general manager

Banner, previously the Cubs' assistant GM, will work alongside team president Mike Elias as Baltimore tries to reverse its recent decline.

The Baltimore Orioles have hired Jared Banner as general manager, the team announced Monday. He'll work alongside president Mike Elias, overseeing player development, coaching and performance.

Banner arrives from the Chicago Cubs, where he served as assistant GM starting in 2024. Before that he held roles as vice president of special projects and vice president of player development for the Cubs, and he began his front-office career with the Boston Red Sox. He was also reportedly in the mix to become the Athletics' head of baseball operations.

"When I first heard Mike's vision, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of," Banner said in a statement. "The Orioles are a storied franchise with a passionate fanbase, a historic ballpark, and an organization full of talent."

The hire comes with Baltimore's front office facing mounting pressure to turn things around after a stretch of decline. Elias had built the Orioles into a contender, with the team winning 192 games over a two-season span, but the rebuild has since stalled, leaving the organization searching for answers heading into the next phase under its new leadership structure.
