Monfils, 40, had intended to retire at November's Paris Masters, but the International Tennis Integrity Agency registered him as retired on October 5, closing out a 22-year career ahead of schedule.\n\nThe confirmation came in a follow-up Instagram post from Svitolina on Tuesday, a day after she first announced that the couple's five-year marriage had ended. She had initially pointed to the psychological and emotional strain of Russia's war in Ukraine as a factor in the split, but her latest post clarified that there were additional reasons behind the separation. It also marked the first public explanation for why Monfils walked away from the sport before his planned farewell at the Paris Masters.\n\nThe pair had been regarded as one of tennis' more prominent couples. No further details on the exact circumstances of the split have been shared beyond Svitolina's social media statements.","published_at":"2026-10-21T00:20:15.583659+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Elina Svitolina confirms that divorce led Gaël Monfils to end tennis career earlier than planned","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/elina-svitolina-confirms-divorce-led-091605717.html"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Elina Svitolina confirms that divorce led Gaël Monfils to end tennis career earlier than planned","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7707026/2026/10/20/elina-svitolina-gael-monfils-divorce-tennis-retirement/"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Elina Svitolina, Gael Monfils ending their marriage after five years: ‘Most difficult thing’","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/19/sports/elina-svitolina-gael-monfils-ending-their-marriage-after-five-years/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Elina Svitolina says Gaël Monfils divorce is due to emotional impact of Russia's war in Ukraine","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7704057/2026/10/19/elina-svitolina-gael-monfils-divorce-tennis-russia-ukraine-war/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Elina Svitolina says Gaël Monfils divorce is due to emotional impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/elina-svitolina-says-ga-l-101606315.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Tennis' Svitolina, Monfils say Russia-Ukraine war led to divorce","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/tennis-svitolina-monfils-russia-ukraine-135601247.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Elina Svitolina announces divorce from Gaël Monfils, cites emotional fallout from Russia-Ukraine war","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/tennis/article/elina-svitolina-announces-divorce-from-gael-monfils-cites-emotional-fallout-from-russia-ukraine-war-161709234.html"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Elina Svitolina clears up reason for Gael Monfils divorce: ‘So much more to it’","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/20/sports/elina-svitolina-clears-up-reason-for-gael-monfils-divorce-so-much-more-to-it/"}],"image":{"url":"https://static01.nyt.com/athletic/uploads/wp/2026/10/20044829/Elina-Svitolina-Gael-Monfils-Tennis-Retirement-scaled.jpg","credit":"The Athletic","width":2560},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
