Svitolina says divorce pushed Monfils into early retirement

The announcement comes a day after Svitolina revealed the end of their five-year marriage.

Elina Svitolina has confirmed that Gaël Monfils ended his tennis career earlier than planned because of the breakdown of their marriage. Monfils, 40, had intended to retire at November's Paris Masters, but the International Tennis Integrity Agency registered him as retired on October 5, closing out a 22-year career ahead of schedule.

The confirmation came in a follow-up Instagram post from Svitolina on Tuesday, a day after she first announced that the couple's five-year marriage had ended. She had initially pointed to the psychological and emotional strain of Russia's war in Ukraine as a factor in the split, but her latest post clarified that there were additional reasons behind the separation. It also marked the first public explanation for why Monfils walked away from the sport before his planned farewell at the Paris Masters.

The pair had been regarded as one of tennis' more prominent couples. No further details on the exact circumstances of the split have been shared beyond Svitolina's social media statements.
