Jim Nantz hurts wrist demonstrating the Peanut Punch with J.J. Watt

The CBS play-by-play man tried the fumble-forcing technique on his new broadcast partner during the Bills-Raiders game and seemed to come away worse for it.

Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt turned a lull in the Buffalo Bills-Las Vegas Raiders broadcast into an impromptu football clinic, and it did not go smoothly for the 67-year-old announcer.

The pair used airtime late in the first half to break down the "Peanut Punch," the ball-stripping technique popularized by former NFL cornerback Charles "Peanut" Tillman, who forced more fumbles than any defensive back in league history. Watt, now in his first year in the CBS booth after retiring from the NFL, explained how modern ball carriers counter the move by gripping their own wrist for extra support while holding the football.

To illustrate just how well that counter works, Watt had Nantz throw a Peanut Punch at the ball while he held it with the reinforced grip. Nantz obliged, and the demonstration appeared to leave him nursing his wrist afterward.

It was a reminder that even broadcast booths aren't entirely injury-proof. No further update on Nantz's condition was given during the broadcast.
