Miami jumps to No. 1 as top-ranked teams tumble

BYU leaps to No. 2 after knocking off Notre Dame, while Georgia's home loss to Auburn opened the door at the top.

Miami is No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2002, moving up after a Week 7 that chewed through the top of the poll. The Hurricanes needed double overtime to get past Florida State, but that ugly win looked fine once No. 1 Georgia lost at home to Auburn and No. 2 Notre Dame fell to BYU.

BYU rode that win over the Fighting Irish to a six-spot jump into No. 2, its highest ranking since 1984, leapfrogging Ohio State in the process. The Buckeyes moved up only one spot despite beating Indiana on the road, partly because quarterback Julian Sayin is dealing with a right shoulder injury. Coach Ryan Day said Sayin is likely out several weeks after getting hurt in the fourth quarter.

Notre Dame and Georgia round out the top five after their losses. Indiana dropped one spot to No. 6 following its loss to Ohio State. With five of the previous top seven teams losing in a single week, the poll looks almost unrecognizable from where it stood before Saturday, and Miami finds itself on top mostly because everyone else blinked first.
