Giants bench Skattebo for Harris, still lose to Saints

New York's running game barely moved even after the shakeup, and the Giants fell behind big before the final whistle.

Cam Skattebo opened Week 6 on the bench. After a string of fumbles through the first five weeks, coach John Harbaugh handed the starting job to Najee Harris against the Saints, and Skattebo finished the game with zero touches.

The move did not fix much. The Giants managed just 37 yards on 15 carries through three quarters against a Saints run defense that had been struggling all season. Harris had four carries for 2 yards at that point, Tyrone Tracy had three for 8, and Devin Singletary added three for 5. New York led 10-0 late in the first half but gave it back in the final 1:18 before halftime, and the game slipped away from there. By the end of the third quarter, the Giants trailed 27-10 as fans at MetLife Stadium booed.

Skattebo had been the Giants' top back through the first five weeks before the fumbling issues piled up. For now, Harris holds the larger role in the backfield, though Sunday's performance did not offer much evidence that the switch alone solves New York's rushing problems.
