The conference says one second should have remained after the Irish's final incomplete pass in a 28-24 loss to No. 8 BYU.
No. 2 Notre Dame lost 28-24 to No. 8 BYU on Saturday night, and the Big 12 now says its officials got the ending wrong. Trailing by four with three seconds left, quarterback CJ Carr threw toward Jaden Greathouse in the back of the end zone. The pass fell incomplete, Greathouse appeared to be held, no flag came out, and the clock was cleared to zero, ending the game.
Except it wasn't supposed to end there. In a statement Saturday night, the Big 12 said its replay officiating crew incorrectly cleared the play, and that one second should have remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground. That would have given Notre Dame one more snap to try to win it.
The conference added it will conduct a full review of its end-of-game officiating process. The loss is a costly one for Notre Dame, which would have had a case for the No. 1 ranking with a win, since top-ranked Georgia lost earlier Saturday. Instead BYU walks away with the upset, and the Big 12 walks away with an admission it can't undo.
