Five of the top eight teams in the AP poll lost, with No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Notre Dame both going down alongside Alabama, Texas and Indiana. It is the first time that many top-eight teams have lost on the same Saturday since 1989.\n\nThe ripple effects reach well beyond the teams that actually played. Texas A&M, for instance, still has Alabama, Tennessee and Texas left on its schedule, and all three look like different, less predictable opponents than they did a week ago. The Aggies have their own issues after an uneven first half, but the carnage around them means nothing on their slate is a sure thing anymore.\n\nMore broadly, the result blows open the College Football Playoff picture that had seemed to be settling into shape. With the sport's usual hierarchy scrambled, the conversation now turns to which teams have actually built the best resumes through the midpoint of the season, since results like this one tend to matter a great deal when playoff selection time comes around.","published_at":"2026-10-19T06:03:42.538373+00:00","source_count":4,"written_from":[{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"College football's ranked-win leaders: Teams with the most victories vs. current AP Top 25","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/college-football-rankings-wins-ap-top-25-opponents/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"College football chaos - 5 top eight teams fall in Week 7","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/college-football-chaos-5-top-180629103.html"},{"outlet":"Fox Sports","publisher":"Fox Sports","title":"College Football Rankings: Historic Upset-Filled Week 7 Flips Top 25 Upside Down","url":"https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-football/rankings-top-25-upsets-georgia-alabama-texas-ohio-state"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Mandel's Final Thoughts: The top of college football fell apart on the best kind of Saturday","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7700283/2026/10/18/college-football-saturday-mandels-final-thoughts/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"College football’s biggest weekend delivered absolute top-10 carnage","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/college-football-biggest-weekend-delivered-233459564.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"How upset-heavy Week 7 produced rare College Football feat","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/upset-heavy-week-7-produced-011421867.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Yahoo Top 10: After a historically chaotic college football Saturday, which team deserves top spot?","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/college-football/article/yahoo-top-10-after-one-of-the-wildest-college-football-saturdays-in-years-which-team-deserves-top-spot-041455028.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Takeaways from College Football Week 7: Chaos reigns supreme as five top-10 squads lose","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/takeaways-college-football-week-7-051135527.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Predicting AP Top 25 college football poll entering Week 8 of 2026 season","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/predicting-ap-top-25-college-110000254.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Updated ESPN FPI college football top 25 rankings after chaotic Week 7","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/updated-espn-fpi-college-football-114008533.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"College football top 25 rankings 2026: AP Top 25 poll entering Week 8","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/college-football-top-25-rankings-175931240.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://s.yimg.com/lo/mysterio/api/960068895f41a30d2eff824ce104561e20b5e6410113bc3b340ed6899da9a677/lightyear_networkapi/resizefill_w1200_h675%3Bquality_80%3Bformat_webp/https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.zenfs.com%2Fen%2Faggies_wire_usa_today_articles_632%2F6619db25556ba16af451711a6819bede.jpg","credit":"Yahoo Sports","width":1200},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
