Texas entered the year with Manning as the centerpiece of massive expectations, and instead the program finds itself scrambling to explain repeated setbacks. When a head coach stops offering a flat endorsement of his starting quarterback, it tends to mean the conversations inside the building have already started.\n\nNo final decision has been announced, and Sarkisian stopped short of saying a change is imminent. But his refusal to give Manning a clear vote of confidence is itself the story, a signal that patience is thinning as losses pile up for a Texas team many expected to be competing at the top of the sport.\n\nWhat happens next depends on how Sarkisian handles practice reps and whether Texas's offense shows any sign of stabilizing. For now, the quarterback job that once looked settled is suddenly an open question.","published_at":"2026-10-19T06:03:42.538373+00:00","source_count":4,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Steve Sarkisian doesn't rule out benching Arch Manning","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/steve-sarkisian-doesnt-rule-benching-000018403.html"},{"outlet":"Pro Football Talk","publisher":"NBC Sports","title":"Steve Sarkisian doesn't rule out benching Arch Manning","url":"https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/steve-sarkisian-doesnt-rule-out-benching-arch-manning"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Steve Sarkisian gets cagey about Arch Manning’s starting job after another ugly Texas loss","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/17/sports/steve-sarkisian-gets-cagey-on-arch-mannings-starting-job-after-another-texas-loss/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Big changes needed at Texas with former No. 1 Longhorns in freefall","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/college-football-week-7-overreactions-big-changes-needed-at-texas-with-former-no-1-longhorns-in-freefall/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Texas football: Steve Sarkisian doesn't rule out benching Arch Manning after Florida loss","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/texas-football-steve-sarkisian-doesnt-220407296.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Arch Manning is a Texas problem, and Steve Sarkisian is last to see it","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/arch-manning-texas-problem-steve-162155357.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://nbcsports.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/9ab262a/2147483647/strip/false/crop/1920x1080+0+0/resize/1920x1080!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhdliveextra-a.akamaihd.net%2FHD%2Fimage_sports%2FNBCU_Sports_Group_-_nbcsports%2F668%2F415%2Fnbc_pft_broncosea_261016.jpg","credit":"Pro Football Talk","width":1920},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
