A reversed touchdown and a contested end zone interception ended Florida State's upset bid against the No. 3 Hurricanes.
Florida State's bid to knock off in-state rival Miami fell apart in double overtime Saturday, as the No. 3 Hurricanes escaped with a 43-35 win. Darian Mensah threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns for Miami, which needed every bit of it against an unranked FSU team that refused to go away.
The Seminoles forced overtime with a 75-yard touchdown with two minutes left in regulation, then traded scores with Miami in the first extra period. In the second overtime, Miami scored first, leaving FSU facing fourth-and-forever near midfield. A 36-yard touchdown pass to Micahi Danzy was wiped out by a holding call, and a desperation throw to Duce Robinson in the end zone was picked off to end the game.
Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell did not hide his frustration afterward. "We had opportunities, but those guys competed until the very end," he said. "For the ending to be like that — I'm just sick." Norvell added that he never got an explanation for the final interception call.
The loss came on a chaotic Saturday that also saw five of the top seven ranked teams in the country fall, though FSU ultimately could not join that list of upsets.
