It took him a while longer than that to actually do it as a head coach, but North Carolina got it done in Durham, handing Belichick his first win over Duke.\n\nThe victory also matches North Carolina's total win count for the 2025 season through six games, a modest but notable marker for a program trying to find its footing under its new coach.\n\nBelichick's ties to the Duke-North Carolina rivalry run through his family history rather than his own playing days, which makes the milestone a personal one as much as a program one. For a coach best known for his decades in the NFL, picking up a signature college rivalry win adds a new line to a resume already full of them.\n\nNo further details on the game itself were provided beyond the result and its significance to Belichick's record against Duke.","published_at":"2026-10-18T05:50:08.332287+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Bill Belichick beats Duke for first time to match 2025 win total in six games","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/18/sports/bill-belichick-beats-duke-for-first-time-to-match-2025-win-total-in-six-games/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Bill Belichick beats Duke for the first time, as North Carolina wins in Durham","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/bill-belichick-beats-duke-first-232047585.html"},{"outlet":"Pro Football Talk","publisher":"NBC Sports","title":"Bill Belichick beats Duke for the first time, as North Carolina wins in Durham","url":"https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/bill-belichick-beats-duke-for-the-first-time-as-north-carolina-wins-in-durham"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Bill Belichick beats Duke for first time to match 2025 win total in six games","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/bill-belichick-beats-duke-first-040604967.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://nypost.com/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2026%2F10%2Fnorth-carolina-head-coach-bill-145486258.jpg?w%3D1024","credit":"New York Post","width":8192},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
