Alex McPherson's 34-yard field goal as time expired capped Auburn's upset after Gunner Stockton fumbled away a potential go-ahead drive with 58 seconds left.
Auburn beat top-ranked Georgia 27-24 on Saturday at Sanford Stadium, with Alex McPherson drilling a 34-yard field goal as time expired to send the Tigers storming the field. It is the second straight week the AP Top 25's No. 1 team has lost to an unranked opponent, after Texas fell to Oklahoma the week before.
Quarterback Byrum Brown powered Auburn's ground game, which controlled the line of scrimmage for much of the afternoon. Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton, who threw two interceptions on the day, had led the Bulldogs on a long touchdown drive in the fourth quarter to tie the game. But with Georgia driving again and looking for a go-ahead field goal, Stockton fumbled on a run from the Auburn 46 with 58 seconds remaining. Safety Sylvester Smith-Reed recovered for the Tigers at the Auburn 44.
A roughing-the-passer penalty on Georgia's Gabe Harris Jr. then helped Auburn move into position for McPherson's winning kick. The win snapped Georgia's nine-game streak in the rivalry and marked Auburn's first victory in Athens since 2005.
