Philo's status as an emergency backup will reportedly be sorted out during warmups, but the start belongs to Jones.\n\nIt will be the first career start for Jones, who has appeared in five games this season mostly in second-half and reserve duty. In that limited action he's completed 23 of 29 passes for 252 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, a 79.3% completion rate.\n\nJones took the bulk of first-team reps in practice this week as Philo was limited. Florida coach Jon Sumrall said the staff trusts Jones if Philo can't go, noting the sophomore has continued stacking reps with the first unit.\n\nThe assignment comes with the Gators looking to snap a two-game slide, putting the inexperienced quarterback in a tough spot on the road against a ranked Texas team.","published_at":"2026-10-17T23:48:29.232361+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Florida Gators to start backup quarterback vs. Texas Longhorns today","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/florida-gators-start-backup-quarterback-154204827.html"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Sources: Florida QB Jones to start vs. Texas, tasked with ending 2-game slide","url":"https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/50201352/sources-florida-qb-tramell-jones-jr-gets-start-vs-texas"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Florida sophomore QB Tramell Jones to start vs. Texas as Aaron Philo deals with injury","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/florida-tramell-jones-starting-qb-texas-aaron-philo-injuury/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Florida ‘expected to start’ Tramell Jones against Texas as Aaron Philo works back from injury","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/florida-expected-start-tramell-jones-234608391.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Florida QB Tramell Jones trending towards starting vs. Texas","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/florida-qb-tramell-jones-trending-234548007.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Report: Florida expected to start Tramell Jones at Texas","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/report-florida-expected-start-tramell-000234785.html"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Florida trending toward starting Tramell Jones at QB vs. Texas as Aaron Philo deals with injury","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/florida-tramell-jones-qb-texas-aaron-philo-injuury/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"“I Don’t Care Who Starts Just Win”: Fans React As Florida Reportedly Set to Start New QB vs Arch Manning’s Texas After Injury to Aaron Philo","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/don-t-care-starts-just-062027307.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Tramell Jones Jr. to start as Florida QB against Texas Longhorns.
