The new rules, reported Friday morning, target parlays that combine under bets on multiple statistics for the same player, so-called first of bets, and under wagers on players expected to average fewer than 12 minutes per game.\n\nBanned first of bets include picks on who wins the opening tip or which player records the first shot or rebound of a game, the kind of low-likelihood, single-play wagers that offer high payouts but are easy to influence if a player or official wanted to tip the outcome.\n\nThe move comes roughly a year after a gambling scandal shook the sport and intensified scrutiny of player prop markets league wide. By instructing its sportsbook partners to restrict these specific bets, the NBA is aiming to close off some of the more obvious avenues for manipulation before the new season gets underway.\n\nThe agreement covers what the league describes as single-event player markets, a category it sees as particularly vulnerable given how a single possession or a few minutes of playing time can swing a bet's outcome.","published_at":"2026-10-16T23:48:26.301536+00:00","source_count":6,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NBA, sportsbooks agree to ban several types of player prop bets amid gambling concerns","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nba-sportsbooks-agree-ban-several-194209257.html"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"NBA instructs sportsbook partners to ban certain bets ripe for manipulation, per report","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/nba-sportsbook-partners-ban-certain-bets/"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"NBA orders sportsbook partners to ban exploitable wagers ahead of new season in stunner","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/16/sports/nba-orders-sportsbook-partners-to-ban-exploitable-wagers/"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"NBA, sportsbooks to restrict bets on single plays, other 'low-likelihood, high-payout' wagers","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7694070/2026/10/16/nba-gambling-policy-bets-rules-update/"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"NBA tells sportsbooks to prohibit certain bets, restrict parlays","url":"https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/50196498/nba-tells-sportsbooks-stop-certain-bets-restrict-parlays"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NBA, sportsbooks agree to ban different types of prop bets","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nba-sportsbooks-agree-ban-different-154516533.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Some wagers, certain parlays no longer can be offered to bettors, NBA tells sportsbooks","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/wagers-certain-parlays-no-longer-160346312.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NBA, sportsbooks reportedly agree to ban certain bets, including parlays involving the under on same player's stats","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/nba/breaking-news/article/nba-sportsbooks-reportedly-agree-to-ban-certain-bets-including-parlays-involving-the-under-on-same-players-stats-151415255.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NBA, sportsbooks enact bans on certain wagers, parlays and under bets","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nba-sportsbooks-enact-bans-certain-193150010.html"},{"outlet":"Front Office Sports","publisher":"Front Office Sports","title":"NBA Draws New Lines on What Fans Can Bet On","url":"https://frontofficesports.com/article/nba-draws-new-lines-fans-bet/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NBA Draws New Lines on What Fans Can Bet On","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nba-draws-lines-fans-bet-211720844.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NBA bans single-player under parlays as gambling cases progress","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nba-bans-single-player-under-213100838.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NBA bans certain types of sports bets following high-profile gambling scandals involving players","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nba-bans-certain-types-sports-231215470.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://a4.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2023%2F1023%2Fr1242629_1296x729_16%2D9.jpg","credit":"ESPN","width":1296},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
