Dave Roberts is the only player in MLB history to be part of a team that erased a 3-0 series deficit, doing it as an outfielder for the 2004 Red Sox against the Yankees.\n\nThat comeback started with a stolen base. Pinch running for Kevin Millar in the bottom of the ninth of Game 4 with Boston trailing 4-3, Roberts worked his way past several Mariano Rivera pick-off attempts before stealing second and coming around to tie the game, part of four straight wins that buried New York's 3-0 lead for good.\n\nThis time around, Roberts is the one trying to pull the strings from the bench, and so far it has not gone well. According to the L.A. Times, Roberts made a string of moves in Game 3 that backfired, from bench decisions to non-pitching changes, and none of it stopped the Dodgers from blowing a lead. Roberts and his players insist there is still room for optimism, though Roberts himself says he will not be leaning on the 2004 story to rally his team now, joking that bringing it up would only lose the room.","published_at":"2026-10-16T05:19:20.697634+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Fox Sports","publisher":"Fox Sports","title":"Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts Has Overcome A 3-0 Deficit Once; Can He Do It Again?","url":"https://www.foxsports.com/stories/mlb/dave-roberts-has-overcome-3-0-deficit-before-david-ortiz-thinks-he-can-do-again"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Dodger notes – Dodgers have one shot to save season","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dodger-notes-dodgers-one-shot-133026090.html"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Dave Roberts sparked MLB's only 3-0 playoff comeback, and he'll try to do it again with Dodgers","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/dave-roberts-mlb-playoff-comeback-dodgers-red-sox/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"3 moves the Dodgers must make to win NLCS Game 4 vs. Brewers","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/3-moves-dodgers-must-win-054437467.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Dave Roberts reveals how Dodgers can keep World Series dreams alive in NLCS Game 4","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dave-roberts-reveals-dodgers-keep-060404682.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Dodgers manager Dave Roberts doesn’t need Red Sox nostalgia to overcome NLCS deficit","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dodgers-manager-dave-roberts-doesn-091336644.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Dave Roberts faces cruel MLB playoff twist as Dodgers fall into historic 3-0 hole against Brewers","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dave-roberts-faces-cruel-mlb-110332788.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Dodgers’ Dave Roberts sounds off on moving Shohei Ohtani to leadoff spot for Game 4 vs. Brewers","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dodgers-dave-roberts-sounds-off-014328515.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Are Dave Roberts’ Decisions Partly Responsible for the Dodgers’ Downfall?","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dave-roberts-decisions-partly-responsible-025246868.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Dodgers manager sends direct message to Brewers after crushing NLCS sweep","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dodgers-manager-sends-direct-message-044253948.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Brewers’ Pat Murphy gives Dave Roberts, Dodgers ultimate respect after NLCS sweep","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/brewers-pat-murphy-gives-dave-061224630.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Dodgers manager Dave Roberts’ instant reaction to shockingly being swept by Brewers in NLCS","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dodgers-manager-dave-roberts-instant-063525171.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Los Angeles Dodgers’ Dave Roberts Drops Blunt Quote After Brewers’ NLCS Sweep","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/los-angeles-dodgers-dave-roberts-065144564.html"}],"image":null,"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
