Washington let the clock expire in field goal range during overtime, and Daniels says the failure is on him.
Jayden Daniels is not pointing fingers. The Commanders quarterback spent the week taking full responsibility for a late-game mistake that turned a potential win over the New York Giants into an overtime draw, saying plainly that the failure was his.
Washington had positioned itself to kick a game-winning field goal, but Daniels did not account for the running clock, which expired before the team could get the attempt off. Instead of a win, the Commanders walked away with a tie.
Daniels also defended head coach Dan Quinn on Thursday, declining to shift any blame toward the coaching staff for how the final sequence unfolded.
The miscue has added to a rough start for Washington, which sits in last place in the NFC East with a 1-3-1 record. With the margin for error already thin, a self-inflicted error like this one stings more than usual, and Daniels seems intent on making sure it does not happen again.
