Jets' Mitchell likely out again after finger procedure

The wide receiver has missed three games since catching a finger in a jersey at practice and is expected to sit a fourth straight against New England.

Adonai Mitchell's finger injury is turning into a season-long subplot for the Jets. Coach Aaron Glenn confirmed Wednesday that the wide receiver recently underwent "a small procedure" to repair the finger, which he hurt when it got caught in a jersey during practice on Sept. 24.

Mitchell has already missed three games and appears set to miss a fourth straight when New York visits New England on Sunday. He has not been placed on injured reserve, which at least keeps open the possibility of a quicker return once he's cleared. Glenn offered a modest update on the healing process, saying Mitchell "is moving his fingers around really, really well."

There is some relief elsewhere in the receiving room. Rookie first-round pick Omar Cooper Jr., who went on injured reserve after a high ankle sprain in the season opener at Tennessee, has had his 21-day practice window opened. That gives the Jets a chance to get him back on the field while they continue to wait on Mitchell.

For now, New York's passing game remains short-handed heading into Week 6, with no firm timetable yet for Mitchell's return.
