Raiders will play Jeanty against Bills, but questions linger

Coach Klint Kubiak confirmed Wednesday that the running back will suit up Sunday, even as some wonder whether he should.

Ashton Jeanty is playing Sunday. That much is settled. Klint Kubiak said so himself on Wednesday, putting to rest any speculation about whether the Raiders running back would be active for the matchup against the Bills.

What is less settled is whether he should be the version of Jeanty the Raiders actually need on the field. There is a meaningful gap between clearing him to take a handoff and trusting him to do something productive with it, and that gap is where the real debate sits heading into Sunday.

Kubiak's declaration gives the Raiders clarity on paper. Jeanty wants to play, and his coach is willing to let him. But health clearances and game-day effectiveness are not always the same thing, and the Raiders will find out which one they got only once the ball is actually snapped against Buffalo.

For now, the plan is simple: Jeanty suits up, and the Raiders hope the handoffs turn into something more than just plays run.
