Dave Dombrowski confirmed the two-year deal after Mattingly went 79-55 following his April takeover for the fired Rob Thomson.
The Philadelphia Phillies are sticking with Don Mattingly, removing his interim label and locking him in through the 2028 season. Team president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced the two-year deal.
Mattingly took over in late April after the Phillies fired Rob Thomson, who had led the club to four straight playoff appearances, including the 2022 World Series, and back-to-back NL East titles, but had the team sitting at 9-19. From there Mattingly steadied things, guiding Philadelphia to a 79-55 record and a return trip to the postseason.
It wasn't a clean finish. The Phillies nearly squandered a four-game lead for a wild-card spot in the season's final week before escaping, only to lose in three games to the Atlanta Braves in the NL Wild Card Series. That exit continued a stretch of disappointing October results since the 2022 pennant run, and it left some fans uneasy about the direction of the club.
Even so, Dombrowski and the Phillies opted for continuity rather than a managerial change, betting that the version of Mattingly who righted the ship in-season is the one who sticks around for the next two years.
