Unsealed memo in Flores lawsuit accused of using racial stereotypes

The document, unsealed Tuesday, is part of Brian Flores' ongoing discrimination lawsuit against the NFL, which also includes Steve Wilks and Ray Horton as plaintiffs.

A recruiting firm's memo evaluating Brian Flores has been unsealed as part of his discrimination lawsuit against the NFL and multiple teams, and Flores' lawyers say it is loaded with racial stereotypes. The memo was made public Tuesday.

Flores' attorneys argue the document illustrates how NFL teams evaluate Black coaching candidates, relying on characterizations they describe as rooted in racial stereotyping rather than objective assessment of coaching ability. The lawsuit, which also names Steve Wilks and Ray Horton as plaintiffs, has been ongoing and continues to produce new documents through the discovery process.

The case centers on claims that the league and its teams have systematically discriminated against Black candidates in hiring for head coaching and senior football operations positions. Flores, who has coached in the NFL, first brought the suit alleging a pattern of sham interviews and biased evaluation processes.

The unsealing of this memo adds another piece of evidence to a case that has drawn scrutiny to how coaching candidates are assessed across the league. The lawsuit remains active, with Flores, Wilks and Horton continuing to pursue their claims against the NFL.
