It is an unusual situation: Espada is being pursued by an AL West rival while still technically employed by Houston.\n\nThe Astros finished the regular season 81-81 but still won the American League West. The postseason ended quickly, with Houston swept 2-0 by the Chicago White Sox in the American League Wild Card Series. Since then the Astros have already parted ways with general manager Dana Brown, and ownership has given Espada only a tepid vote of confidence, leaving his status with the club in limbo.\n\nAgainst that backdrop, Houston granted Espada permission to speak with Seattle about its opening. The Mariners are considering him for the job, according to reporting that cited sources within the league. No decision has been reported on either Seattle's hire or Espada's future in Houston.","published_at":"2026-10-13T23:18:46.370532+00:00","source_count":5,"written_from":[{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Source: Mariners get OK to interview Astros' Espada for managerial job","url":"https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/50176901/source-mariners-get-ok-interview-astros-joe-espada"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Mariners interviewing Joe Espada with his Astros future in limbo","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/13/sports/mariners-interviewing-joe-espada-with-his-astros-future-in-limbo/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Houston Astros’ Joe Espada Meeting With AL West Rival For Manager Job","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/houston-astros-joe-espada-meeting-182449109.html"},{"outlet":"MLB.com","publisher":"MLB.com","title":"Mariners considering Espada for manager vacancy (source)","url":"https://www.mlb.com/news/joe-espada-to-interview-for-mariners-manager-position"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Mariners to interview Astros' Joe Espada for managerial vacancy: Source","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7686764/2026/10/13/mariners-interview-joe-espada-manager/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Mariners seek permission to hire rival team’s manager","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/mariners-seek-permission-hire-rival-162401206.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Mariners interviewing Espada, per reports","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/mariners-interviewing-espada-per-reports-163857713.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Joe Espada’s Tenure With Astros Appears to Be Over","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/joe-espada-tenure-astros-appears-164940285.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Astros reportedly allow Joe Espada to interview for Mariners' manager job despite still being under contract","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/article/astros-reportedly-allow-joe-espada-to-interview-for-mariners-manager-job-despite-still-being-under-contract-171527155.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Joe Espada, in limbo with Astros, to interview for Mariners' managerial job","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/joe-espada-limbo-astros-interview-181945676.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Seattle's interest in Joe Espada could give the Mariners an inside edge","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/seattles-interest-joe-espada-could-181921757.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Report: Mariners receive permission from Astros to interview manager Espada","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/report-mariners-receive-permission-astros-222449708.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Mariners interviewing Joe Espada with his Astros future in limbo","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/mariners-interviewing-joe-espada-astros-205840294.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://a2.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2026%2F0825%2Fr1706931_1296x729_16%2D9.jpg","credit":"ESPN","width":1296},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
