Harrison Mevis had a field goal blocked in the loss, the latest entry in what has become a running theme for Sean McVay's team this season.\n\nThe Rams currently rank 32nd in the NFL in special teams expected points added, dead last in the league. That number does a lot of the explaining here. When your kicking unit is the worst in football, a blocked field goal in overtime stops being a surprise and starts being an inevitability.\n\nNot everyone is pointing only at special teams, though. ESPN's Mina Kimes raised a separate question about the Rams' defensive approach, asking on social media why Los Angeles chose to play man coverage on Buffalo's final drive, calling it something she \"still can't get over.\"\n\nBetween the special teams rankings and the defensive call on that last drive, McVay has more than one unit to review this week. The Rams have nobody to blame but themselves, and fixing it falls on the coaching staff before it costs them again.","published_at":"2026-10-14T04:49:16.110960+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Mina Kimes has 1 big question for Sean McVay’s Rams coaching staff after Bills loss, and it’s not about special teams","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/mina-kimes-1-big-sean-145415169.html"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"A Super Bowl roster with a special teams circus: Rams have nobody to blame but themselves","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/13/sports/rams-special-teams-meltdown-costs-them-overtime-loss-to-bills-as-sean-mcvay-fumes/"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Sean McVay cannot rely on the Rams' special teams -- and the Rams must fix it before it's too late ... again","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/sean-mcvay-cannot-rely-on-rams-special-teams/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"‘This stings’ – Sean McVay shares his anger after the Los Angeles Rams’ OT defeat","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/stings-sean-mcvay-shares-anger-052739557.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"We need to have a conversation about this Sean McVay problem that keeps costing Rams games","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/conversation-sean-mcvay-problem-keeps-140258363.html"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Sean McVay is ‘sick’ after costly decision in Rams’ brutal overtime loss","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/13/sports/sean-mcvay-is-sick-after-costly-decision-in-rams-brutal-overtime-loss/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Super Bowl favorite Rams are back in a familiar position, sitting under .500 after 5 games","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/super-bowl-favorite-rams-back-222407292.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Sean McVay confirms Bubba Ventrone isn't in danger of losing his job","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/sean-mcvay-confirms-bubba-ventrone-011031126.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Rams’ Sean McVay strongly defends special teams coordinator after Bills disaster","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/rams-sean-mcvay-strongly-defends-044129797.html"}],"image":null,"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
