49ers' Dre Greenlaw suspended one game after headbutt ejection

Greenlaw will sit out San Francisco's Week 6 game against the Commanders without pay after headbutting helmetless Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones.

The NFL has suspended 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw one game without pay, meaning San Francisco's No. 2 linebacker will miss Week 6 against the Washington Commanders.

The discipline stems from Sunday's divisional matchup with the Seattle Seahawks, when Greenlaw was ejected in the second quarter. A late hit on Seattle quarterback Sam Darnold sparked a confrontation on the Seahawks sideline, and Greenlaw responded by using his helmet to headbutt Seattle linebacker Ernest Jones IV, who was not wearing a helmet at the time. The league cited a violation of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which covers conduct contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.

The ejection itself was notable for how it happened. Rather than the on-field officials making the call, the league office directed the ejection from afar.

It is not the first time Greenlaw has found himself in this territory. He has now been ejected from three games and suspended twice during his NFL career. He will be eligible to return to the lineup the following week.
