Washington had the ball at the Giants' 26-yard line with 55 seconds left and no timeouts but never got a field-goal attempt off.
The Commanders blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead and then blew the chance to fix it. With first and 10 at the Giants' 26 and 55 seconds left in overtime, Washington ran the ball twice instead of working toward a game-winning field goal. Quarterback Jayden Daniels took a handoff, then on the next snap with 13 seconds left appeared to look to pass before tucking the ball and going down in the middle of the field. His receivers could not get back to the line in time to spike it, and the clock ran out on a 27-27 tie.
The fallout was immediate. Mike Tomlin said the finish made him throw up in his mouth a little bit. Pro Football Talk called it malpractice by the coaching staff, noting Daniels could have thrown the ball into the dirt to stop the clock. Commanders coach Dan Quinn took responsibility after the game, as did Daniels.
Commanders co-owner Magic Johnson posted on social media that he was in total disbelief over the poor clock management, writing that all the team had to do was kick the field goal to win. One analyst suggested the blunder was bad enough that NFL broadcasts should start employing dedicated clock-management analysts, and Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reportedly called it a firing offense.
