New York fumbled away a chip-shot field goal try, then Washington let the clock expire with a shot to win it themselves.
The Giants and Commanders played to a 27-27 tie on a rain-soaked Sunday in Landover, the first tie of the NFL season, after both teams botched golden chances to win it in overtime.
Jameis Winston had rallied New York back from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime. In the extra period, with the Commanders out of timeouts after the two-minute warning, John Harbaugh had Cam Skattebo run the ball on first down from the Washington 24-yard line rather than take a knee. Skattebo fumbled, and Washington recovered.
Jayden Daniels then drove the Commanders into position for a potential game-winning field goal, hitting two passes for 29 yards and running for 16 more to reach the Giants' 24. All Washington needed to do was spike the ball and send out the kicker. Instead, Daniels took a snap and the clock ran out, with Daniels going down with eight seconds left, ending the game in a tie. Commanders coach Dan Quinn was visibly furious on the sideline as the sequence unfolded.
Despite not getting the win, New York held onto first place in the NFC East. Giants fans largely defended Skattebo afterward, treating the fumble as a rare misstep from a player who has become a fan favorite since joining the team this season.
