Warriors lock up Podziemski with five-year, $110 million extension

The deal keeps the young guard in Golden State while barely touching the cap space the team saved for next summer.

The Golden State Warriors and Brandin Podziemski have agreed to a five-year, $110 million extension, according to his agent via ESPN's Shams Charania. The contract includes a mutual option for both player and team in the fifth year.

Podziemski earned it. He played in all 82 games last season, starting 43, and led the Warriors in minutes while averaging 13.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game, shooting 37.1% from three. He also appeared in two Play-In Tournament games and has built a reputation as a solid perimeter defender, something Golden State values next to Stephen Curry even if the pairing isn't always a seamless fit.

Steve Kerr didn't hide his satisfaction with the extension. "Really happy for us," Kerr said. "It's a win-win. He should be very proud of the work he's put in to get to this place and put himself in this position." The comments cap two seasons of Podziemski steadily winning over coaches and teammates.

From a business standpoint, the deal only eats into $2 million of the cap space the Warriors had cleared for next summer, letting them keep flexibility for one more run at a title while Curry is still playing at a high level.
