Fan interference call costs Yankees a run, then the season

Oct 8, 2026 · 3:17 PM ET

The Rays swept New York out of the ALDS with a Game 3 win after Anthony Volpe's apparent tying home run was overturned to a double.

A fan in left field made the defining play of the Yankees' season. With two outs in the sixth inning of Game 3 of the ALDS at Yankee Stadium, Anthony Volpe drove a 1-0 sinker to left field that looked like a two-run home run that would have tied the game. Yankee Stadium erupted, briefly.

Replay told a different story. Rays left fielder Victor Mesa Jr. was tracking the ball and trying to make a catch when a fan reached out and the ball hit his outstretched arms before falling over the fence. Mesa immediately complained to umpires, and after a review, officials ruled it fan interference, saying it was "definitively determined." The home run became a double instead.

The Yankees pulled within 4-3, but Spencer Jones struck out right after, stranding Volpe at second as the tying run. That was effectively the end of it. The Rays completed the sweep, and the Yankees' season is over, extending their World Series drought to 17 years. New York managed only five total runs across the series, but the fan interference call will be remembered as the moment that got away.
