The hire would make Rivers the first coach to fill a head coaching vacancy this cycle.\n\nRivers brings zero college coaching experience to the job. He has been a high school coach since 2021, with a brief return to the NFL last year, but has never worked on a college sideline in any capacity. That makes him one of the more unconventional hires among major-conference programs, pulled straight from a prep job rather than a coordinator chair or coaching tree.\n\nThe last time a major-conference program reached into a high school for its head coach was Notre Dame's hiring of Gerry Faust before the 1981 season, making Rivers the first such hire since then.\n\nRivers remains one of the most decorated players in NC State history, and the hire comes 23 years after he finished his Wolfpack career with school records that still stand. Rivers reportedly completed his high school season before confirming an interview with NC State, and the move now appears close to becoming official.","published_at":"2026-11-08T18:18:56.313484+00:00","source_count":4,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Why NC State is hiring Philip Rivers as football program’s next head coach","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/why-nc-state-hiring-philip-170432686.html"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"NC State set to hire Philip Rivers, pulling Wolfpack great straight from high school: Sources","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7751215/2026/11/08/philip-rivers-nc-state-head-coach-hire/"},{"outlet":"Pro Football Talk","publisher":"NBC Sports","title":"Philip Rivers completes high-school season, confirms interview with NC State","url":"https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/philip-rivers-completes-high-school-season-confirms-interview-with-nc-state"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Philip Rivers reflects on high school coaching career amid NC State rumors: 'Heck of a six years'","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/philip-rivers-reflects-high-school-054251860.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Linked to NC State Job, Philip Rivers Addresses ‘Next Step’ in Coaching Career After St. Michael’s Loss","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/linked-nc-state-job-philip-062844998.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"“He’ll Be Named the NC State Coach”: John Middlekauff Predicts Timeline of Philip Rivers Joining Wolfpack After Telling Interview","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/ll-named-nc-state-coach-114841045.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Philip Rivers completes high-school season, confirms interview with NC State","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/philip-rivers-completes-high-school-195510317.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NC State and Philip Rivers reportedly negotiating deal to make him the Wolfpack's next head coach","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/college-football/breaking-news/article/nc-state-and-philip-rivers-reportedly-negotiating-deal-to-make-him-the-wolfpacks-next-head-coach-163923507.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NC State working to finalize hiring Philip Rivers as Wolfpack's head coach","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nc-state-working-finalize-hiring-171755175.html"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"NC State finalizing deal to hire Philip Rivers as next coach: Wolfpack betting big on program legend","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/nc-state-hire-philip-rivers-coach/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NC State football set to hire Philip Rivers as coach to replace Dave Doeren","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nc-state-football-set-hire-173332062.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Philip Rivers is perfect fit for alma mater NC State football program","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/philip-rivers-perfect-fit-alma-172735628.html"},{"outlet":"Pro Football Talk","publisher":"NBC Sports","title":"Philip Rivers, NC State are finalizing a deal to make him the next head coach","url":"https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/philip-rivers-nc-state-are-finalizing-a-deal-to-make-him-the-next-head-coach"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"N.C.
