Mariners hire away Yankees catching coach Tanner Swanson

Swanson, the Yankees' catching coordinator since November 2019, joins new manager Jason Kanzler's Seattle staff as bench coach.

The Yankees have lost another coach this week. Tanner Swanson, the organization's director of catching since 2020, is leaving to become bench coach for the Seattle Mariners under new manager Jason Kanzler, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

It is the second notable departure from the Yankees' staff in a matter of days. Triple-A manager Shelley Duncan left earlier in the week to join the Red Sox staff. Neither move involved a firing on New York's part, but the Yankees now have multiple holes to fill on their coaching staff.

Swanson is widely regarded as one of the top catching instructors in baseball, credited with revolutionizing the Yankees' approach to pitch framing. Austin Wells became the clearest example of that work, developing into one of the game's better pitch framers under Swanson's guidance since his arrival with the organization.

The move also brings Swanson back to familiar territory, as he returns to his hometown in joining the Mariners. Seattle now adds a respected teaching voice to its coaching staff as it builds out Kanzler's first group of assistants.
