Rice claims more than $3.45 million in debts, much of it tied to civil lawsuits against him.
Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Wednesday, Nov. 4, according to court documents filed in the Northern District of Texas bankruptcy court. Rice listed more than $3.45 million in debts in the filing.
A majority of those debts stem from civil litigation, with varying plaintiffs suing Rice in cases that have either already been settled or are still awaiting trial, according to the filing.
Rice is in the final year of his four-year, $6.45 million rookie contract with the Chiefs. The bankruptcy filing comes after a stretch of legal battles for the receiver, though the exact nature of those underlying lawsuits was not detailed beyond their connection to the listed debts.
It remains to be seen how the Chapter 7 filing will affect Rice's finances going forward or whether it carries any implications for his standing with the Chiefs as he plays out the final season of his rookie deal.
