Lakers send Bronny James down to the G League

The assignment comes after James logged just 12 minutes across five appearances in his third NBA season.

The Lakers have assigned Bronny James to their G League affiliate, the Coachella Valley Lakers, after barely using him through the team's 7-2 start to the season.

James has appeared in just five games this year, totaling only 12 minutes of floor time. For a third-year player, that kind of usage leaves little room to develop, which appears to be the thinking behind the move: get him reps where he can actually play rather than ride the bench in Los Angeles.

The assignment raises questions about where James fits in the Lakers' plans going forward. With the big club off to a strong start and rotation minutes scarce, Coachella Valley offers a path to real playing time, even if it is not the stage anyone expected when he was drafted.

Nothing suggests this is permanent. G League assignments are typically short-term tools for player development, and James could be recalled depending on how the Lakers' roster situation evolves.
