Gotham FC heads in having already locked up the shield and now wants to pair it with a repeat championship, a double that would cap off their title defense in style.\n\nThe quarterfinal round kicks off Friday with a handful of compelling matchups, including a first-round collision between USWNT stars Trinity Rodman and Sophia Wilson. San Diego Wave, seeded No. 2, draws the Utah Royals, who secured their first-ever playoff berth this season. The Wave enter on a seven-game unbeaten run, leaning on captain Kennedy Wesley and a defense that conceded the fewest expected goals in the league while generating the fourth-most xG of any club.\n\nBeyond the Wave and Gotham, this season brought its share of chaos and firsts. Boston Legacy and Denver Summit both made their playoff debuts, and the league set a record for red cards issued in a single season. None of that guarantees anything once the knockout rounds start.\n\nThe quarterfinals begin this weekend, with the field narrowing toward a champion crowned in two weeks.","published_at":"2026-11-05T23:34:19.762266+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Ranking the NWSL quarterfinalists: Gotham FC shield winners, but are they the most powerful postseason team?","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/ranking-the-nwsl-quarterfinalists-gotham-fc/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NWSL playoff preview: USWNT stars Trinity Rodman and Sophia Wilson collide - but can anyone stop reigning champions Gotham?","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nwsl-playoff-preview-uswnt-stars-002641675.html"},{"outlet":"SB Nation","publisher":"SB Nation","title":"NWSL playoff rankings: Favorites, contenders, wild cards and long-shots","url":"https://www.sbnation.com/womens-sports/1134665/nwsl-playoff-rankings-favorites-contenders-wild-cards-and-long-shots"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NWSL playoff rankings: Favorites, contenders, wild cards and long-shots","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nwsl-playoff-rankings-favorites-contenders-193003051.html"}],"image":null,"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
