The future Hall of Famer joins Yankees bench coach Brad Ausmus among candidates for Houston's vacancy.
Albert Pujols is set to interview for the Houston Astros' managerial opening this week, according to sources. The Astros have not publicly named their candidates, but Yankees bench coach Brad Ausmus is also reportedly in the mix.
Pujols has made no secret of wanting to manage since he retired after the 2022 season. He interviewed last year for openings with the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres but did not land either job. Since then he has stayed busy on the bench, managing the Dominican Republic to a third-place finish at the 2026 World Baseball Classic and leading Leones del Escogido to the 2025 Caribbean Series championship.
There is some irony in the pairing. As a player, Pujols spent years tormenting the Astros, particularly during his time with the Cardinals in a rivalry that produced plenty of postseason drama. Now he could end up running their dugout instead of beating them from the other one.
No timeline has been given for when Houston expects to make a decision.
