The Ducks reached nine NCAA Tournament appearances under him, including a Final Four berth in 2017, along with four Pac-12 regular season titles and four Pac-12 tournament titles. Across his full 37-year head coaching career, which included 16 seasons at Creighton before Oregon, Altman's overall record stands at 792-425.\n\nThe timing is notable, with the announcement landing less than a month before the start of the season, leaving the Ducks to figure out their next move on short notice.\n\nAltman framed the decision as one of the hardest of his career. \"I have had to make two really tough decisions in my coaching career,\" he said. \"The first was leaving Creighton, a place my family and I dearly loved, to come to Oregon.\" He did not immediately detail what the second decision entailed beyond the retirement itself.","published_at":"2026-10-08T19:17:55.251375+00:00","source_count":6,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Fox Sports","publisher":"Fox Sports","title":"Oregon Men's Basketball Coach Dana Altman Announces Retirement After 16 Seasons","url":"https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-basketball/oregon-mens-basketball-coach-dana-altman-announces-his-retirement"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Altman retires as winningest coach in Oregon hoops history","url":"https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/50126205/source-oregon-men-basketball-coach-dana-altman-retiring"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Longtime Oregon coach Dana Altman suddenly retires ahead of season","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/10/07/sports/oregon-coach-dana-altman-suddenly-retires-ahead-of-season/"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Oregon Ducks men's basketball coach Dana Altman retires","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7669001/2026/10/07/oregon-ducks-dana-altman-retire/"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Dana Altman retires: Oregon coach steps down in surprise move less than a month before start of 2026-27 season","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/dana-altman-retires-oregon-basketball/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Long-time Oregon coach Dana Altman reportedly retires less than a month before regular season","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/mens-college-basketball/breaking-news/article/long-time-oregon-coach-dana-altman-reportedly-retires-less-than-a-month-before-regular-season-165318047.html"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Oregon basketball coach Dana Altman retiring less than one month before season starts","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/oregon-basketball-coach-dana-altman-171531294.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Dana Altman retires as Oregon basketball coach","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dana-altman-retires-oregon-basketball-172753839.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Oregon basketball head coach Dana Altman retires","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/oregon-basketball-head-coach-dana-173011026.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Five potential long-term head coach candidates for Oregon MBB","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/five-potential-long-term-head-180612052.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Oregon men’s basketball coach Dana Altman suddenly retires right before 2026-27 season","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/oregon-men-basketball-coach-dana-180634016.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Oregon men's basketball coach Dana Altman announces his retirement","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/oregon-mens-basketball-coach-dana-180350804.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Oregon men’s basketball coach Dana Altman announces his retirement","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/oregon-men-basketball-coach-dana-184337206.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Dana Altman's retirement in offseason's twilight becomes latest in mysterious trend","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/dana-altmans-retirement-offseasons-twilight-191222249.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Oregon basketball coach Dana Altman retires after four decades in Division I","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/oregon-basketball-coach-dana-altman-194715434.html"},{"outlet":"Fox Sports","publisher":"Fox Sports","title":"5 Candidates Oregon Basketball Could Turn To After Dana Altman's Retirement","url":"https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-basketball/5-candidates-oregon-basketball-could-turn-after-dana-altmans-retirement"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"'I'm so grateful.'
