Dana Altman retires as Oregon's winningest basketball coach

The 68-year-old steps down effective immediately, less than a month before the 2026-27 season begins.

Dana Altman is retiring as Oregon's men's basketball coach effective immediately, the school announced Wednesday, closing out a 16-season run that made him the winningest coach in program history.

Altman took over ahead of the 2010-11 season and finishes with a 382-182 record at Oregon. The Ducks reached nine NCAA Tournament appearances under him, including a Final Four berth in 2017, along with four Pac-12 regular season titles and four Pac-12 tournament titles. Across his full 37-year head coaching career, which included 16 seasons at Creighton before Oregon, Altman's overall record stands at 792-425.

The timing is notable, with the announcement landing less than a month before the start of the season, leaving the Ducks to figure out their next move on short notice.

Altman framed the decision as one of the hardest of his career. "I have had to make two really tough decisions in my coaching career," he said. "The first was leaving Creighton, a place my family and I dearly loved, to come to Oregon." He did not immediately detail what the second decision entailed beyond the retirement itself.
