Jack Campbell says he has full movement in his lower body

The Lions linebacker, hospitalized since being stretchered off the field Sunday against the Vikings, says he is also making progress moving his upper body.

Jack Campbell issued his first public update Wednesday since suffering a neck injury that sent him to the hospital. The Lions linebacker was hurt while making a tackle on Vikings tight end TJ Hockenson during Sunday's game, lying motionless on the Ford Field turf before being stabilized on a stretcher and carted away.

In a statement released through the team, Campbell said he has "full movement in my lower body" and is "continuing to make progress with movement in my upper body." He described himself as "incredibly encouraged by the progress I've made in such a short period of time" and said he remains optimistic while taking things one day at a time.

Campbell also thanked the athletic trainers and medical personnel who treated him on the field, along with those who have cared for him since. Team updates in the days following the injury had been brief, reflecting a desire to respect Campbell and his family's privacy. Wednesday's statement marked the first detailed account of his condition since he was taken from the stadium to a hospital for further evaluation.
