Miami's strength of schedule sat 49th nationally going into the reveal, but the unbeaten record carried the day.\n\nCommittee chair Hunter Yurachek, the Arkansas athletic director, called the choice of Miami at No. 1 \"really unanimous,\" even as other parts of the rankings drew confusion. Georgia came in at No. 2 with a better marquee win, at No. 5 Alabama, though the Bulldogs also carry a home loss to 4-4 Auburn on their resume.\n\nNotre Dame landed at No. 11, setting up a looming matchup with Miami that could reshape the Hurricanes' playoff picture. The rankings also set the stage for a busy Week 10, with four matchups between Top 15 teams on the schedule. Alabama's surprise top-five placement and Notre Dame's spot outside the top ten were among the choices that left observers picking apart the committee's logic.","published_at":"2026-11-04T17:51:44.237427+00:00","source_count":5,"written_from":[{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"CFP Rankings winners and losers: Alabama playoff path widens, Notre Dame outlook takes a hit","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/cfp-rankings-winners-losers-notre-dame-alabama/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Hurricanes’ No. 1 CFP spot may hide a problem Notre Dame can attack","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/hurricanes-no-1-cfp-spot-124522324.html"},{"outlet":"New York Post","publisher":"New York Post","title":"Miami gets historic No. 1 spot as Alabama nabs surprise top-five ranking in first CFP reveal","url":"https://nypost.com/2026/11/03/sports/miami-gets-historic-no-1-spot-alabama-top-five-ranking-in-cfp-reveal/"},{"outlet":"SB Nation","publisher":"SB Nation","title":"CFP rankings: Initial playoff bracket projection sets stage for huge Week 10","url":"https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/1134914/college-football-playoff-bracket-rankings-week-10-miami-notre-dame"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Miami tops 1st CFP rankings as date with No. 11 Notre Dame looms","url":"https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/50373576/miami-georgia-utah-indiana-headline-first-cfp-rankings"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"CFP rankings 2026: Miami ranked #1 in first playoff rankings","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/cfp-rankings-2026-miami-ranked-002300260.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"CFP rankings: Initial playoff bracket projection sets stage for huge Week 10","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/cfp-rankings-initial-playoff-bracket-002135101.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"First CFP rankings deliver surprises and clues for chaotic playoff race","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/first-cfp-rankings-deliver-surprises-002057191.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Miami gets top spot in first CFP rankings, followed by Georgia, Utah and Indiana; Notre Dame 11th","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/miami-gets-top-spot-first-003309124.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"CFP rankings 2026: Alabama ranks 5th in first playoff rankings","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/cfp-rankings-2026-alabama-ranks-004655091.html"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"College Football Playoff Rankings: Miami (FL) opens at No. 1 over Georgia as SEC dominates top 25","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/college-football-playoff-rankings-top-25-2026-week-10/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Miami Makes History by Claiming No. 1 Spot in First CFP Rankings","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/miami-makes-history-claiming-no-014023590.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"First CFP rankings deliver surprises and clues for chaotic playoff race","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/first-cfp-rankings-deliver-surprises-030822414.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"College Football Playoff Rankings reaction: SEC sitting pretty; CFP committee's inconsistent logic","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/college-football-playoff-rankings-reaction-034224955.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Paul Finebaum shreds CFP rankings over Alabama: ‘It really doesn’t make any sense’","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/paul-finebaum-shreds-cfp-rankings-173413493.html"}],"image":{"url":"https://nypost.com/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2026%2F11%2Fhurricanes-wide-receiver-malachi-toney-147161902.jpg?w%3D1024","credit":"New York Post","width":8640},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
