It is a familiar position for Jones, who has spent decades insisting he would do anything to bring another Lombardi Trophy to Dallas while also declining to pay top of market for the person actually coaching the team.\n\nThe numbers make that argument a tough sell. The five highest-paid coaches in the league are Andy Reid, Sean Payton, John Harbaugh, Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan. In 2026 their combined record is 25-11-1, and between them they have six Super Bowl trophies and 11 Super Bowl appearances. The highest-paid coaches in the NFL currently make around 20 million dollars, while Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer's salary is estimated between 5 million and 8 million dollars.\n\nJones has long said he would be embarrassed by the size of the check he would write for a championship, just apparently not the check that goes to his head coach. Cowboys fans have griped about this trade-off for years, and Jones's latest comments only sharpen the contrast between his stated ambitions and his actual spending habits.","published_at":"2026-11-04T23:33:22.238429+00:00","source_count":4,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Pro Football Talk","publisher":"NBC Sports","title":"The facts contradict Jerry Jones's beliefs regarding coaching pay and wins","url":"https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/the-facts-contradict-jerry-joness-belief-regarding-coaching-pay-and-wins"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Cowboys' Jones sounds hypocritical in defiance of coaching pay trends","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/cowboys-jones-sounds-hypocritical-defiance-113120658.html"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says there's no correlation between coach pay and winning","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7750547/2026/11/03/cowboys-jerry-jones-coach-pay-schottenheimer/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Jerry Jones defended not paying head coaches top dollar","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/jerry-jones-defended-not-paying-171238487.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Cowboys’ Jerry Jones rejects link between coach salaries and winning amid 2026 NFL season","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/cowboys-jerry-jones-rejects-between-181538314.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Jerry Jones claims (incorrectly) that there's "no correlation" between coaching pay and winning","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/jerry-jones-claims-incorrectly-theres-184939358.html"},{"outlet":"Pro Football Talk","publisher":"NBC Sports","title":"Jerry Jones claims (incorrectly) that there's \"no correlation\" between coaching pay and winning","url":"https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/jerry-jones-claims-incorrectly-that-theres-no-correlation-between-coaching-pay-and-winning"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"“Put That in Your Hopper and Smoke It”: Jerry Jones Fires Back at Critics Over Cowboys’ Coaching Spending Amid Disappointing Season","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/put-hopper-smoke-jerry-jones-010358986.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Cowboys' Jerry Jones says there's 'no correlation' between coaches' salaries, winning","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/cowboys-jerry-jones-says-theres-043003198.html"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Wetzel: Jerry Jones' stance on coach pay is a sign he remains Cowboys' biggest problem","url":"https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/50380574/dan-wetzel-dallas-cowboys-jerry-jones-owner-17-billion"}],"image":{"url":"https://nbcsports.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/b827657/2147483647/strip/false/crop/1920x1080+0+0/resize/1920x1080!/quality/90/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fhdliveextra-a.akamaihd.net%2FHD%2Fimage_sports%2FNBCU_Sports_Group_-_nbcsports%2F586%2F731%2Fnbc_pft_jerry_pay_261104.jpg","credit":"Pro Football Talk","width":1920},"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
