The move came a day after the Finnish Ice Hockey Association said it was trying to build a coalition to keep Russia out of the sport.\n\nThe dispute traces back to Friday, when the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that Russia must be allowed to compete in International Ice Hockey Federation events again after several appeals from the Russian hockey federation. The IIHF, like most other Olympic federations, banned Russia after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and had renewed that ban every year since.\n\nCAS's ruling effectively forces the IIHF's hand, but it does nothing to change how individual federations feel about sharing the ice with Russian sides. With Denmark, Latvia, Norway and Sweden now on record refusing to play Russia, and Finland working the phones to add more countries to the list, the IIHF faces a world championship picture where its own reinstatement ruling could be undermined by teams simply declining to show up.","published_at":"2026-11-03T23:33:12.288917+00:00","source_count":4,"written_from":[{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Sweden, Norway, more join hockey worlds boycott over Russia reinstatement","url":"https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/50368089/norway-pledges-boycott-hockey-worlds-russia"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Sweden, Norway among nations refusing to play Russian hockey teams after CAS decision","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/sweden-norway-among-nations-refusing-144605101.html"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Sweden, Norway among nations refusing to play Russian hockey teams after CAS decision","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7750422/2026/11/03/russia-hockey-iihf-norway-sweden/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Finland says its national teams won't play against Russia in hockey tournaments","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/finland-says-national-teams-wont-214916062.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Norway joins Finland in boycotting hockey world championship games against Russia","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/norway-joins-finland-boycotting-hockey-113048993.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Nations threaten to boycott ice hockey worlds as Russia can compete","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nations-threaten-boycott-ice-hockey-120334992.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Norway, Sweden join Finland in Russia boycott at hockey world championship games","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/norway-sweden-join-finland-russia-152131141.html"},{"outlet":"Front Office Sports","publisher":"Front Office Sports","title":"Global Hockey Heavy Hitters Refuse to Play Reinstated Russia","url":"https://frontofficesports.com/article/global-hockey-heavy-hitters-refuse-to-play-reinstated-russia/"}],"image":null,"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
