Prosecutors say the pitchers accepted several thousand dollars in payoffs to help two gamblers who, according to the indictment, made hundreds of thousands of dollars off their inside knowledge.\n\nClase, the Guardians' former closer, and Ortiz, a starter, have both pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges. Both remain on nondisciplinary leave from the club without pay while the case plays out.\n\nSeveral professional baseball players, along with catchers and baseball executives, are expected to testify as witnesses. For Clase and Ortiz, the stakes extend well beyond their pitching careers, with potential prison time on the line if convicted.","published_at":"2026-11-02T23:20:46.962309+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Fox Sports","publisher":"Fox Sports","title":"Ex-Guardians Pitchers Emmanuel Clase, Luis Ortiz Begin Federal Fraud Trial","url":"https://www.foxsports.com/stories/mlb/excleveland-guardians-pitchers-including-star-reliever-go-to-trial-in-new-york-on-fraud-charges"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Trial begins for Guardians' Clase, Ortiz in pitch-rigging case","url":"https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/50328511/mlb-guardians-emmanuel-clase-luis-ortiz-pitch-rigging-trial"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Ex-Cleveland Guardians pitchers, including star reliever, go to trial in New York on fraud charges","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/ex-cleveland-guardians-pitchers-including-052015745.html"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Trial of MLB players on pitch-rigging scandal opens","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/trial-mlb-players-pitch-rigging-221408096.html"}],"image":null,"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
