The decision from coach Brent Venables follows a 42-25 home loss to South Carolina in which the Sooners' offense totaled just 118 yards and three points through three quarters.\n\nArbuckle was in his second season running Oklahoma's offense after arriving from Washington State, where he previously served as offensive coordinator. He was making $1.5 million per year under his contract. The Sooners' offense never found consistency under him this fall, ranking 111th nationally in total offense and 108th in scoring, with quarterback John Mateer struggling to get the unit on track.\n\nThe unranked Sooners are now 4-4 and head to Florida in Week 10. It's unclear who will handle playcalling duties on an interim basis, but Kevin Wilson has been reported as the leading candidate for the role. Oklahoma made the College Football Playoff last season, making this year's offensive collapse and midseason coaching change a sharp turn for the program.","published_at":"2026-11-02T23:20:46.962309+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"OU football fires Ben Arbuckle in second season as Sooners' OC, per reports","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/ou-football-fires-ben-arbuckle-173111055.html"},{"outlet":"CBS Sports","publisher":"CBS Sports","title":"Oklahoma expected to fire Ben Arbuckle: Sooners to part with OC as offense continues to sputter in 2026 season","url":"https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/oklahoma-fires-ben-arbuckle-offensive-coordinator-sooners/"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Oklahoma fires offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle as Sooners follow CFP with 4-4 start: Source","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7748055/2026/11/02/oklahoma-fires-ben-arbuckle-offensive-coordinator/"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Oklahoma’s Brent Venables Gets Brutally Honest After Embarrassing South Carolina Loss","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/oklahoma-brent-venables-gets-brutally-142056665.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Brent Venables delivers blunt assessment of OU's offensive struggles","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/brent-venables-delivers-blunt-assessment-210045606.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Oklahoma’s Brent Venables fires OC Ben Arbuckle as season goes down drain","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/oklahoma-brent-venables-fires-oc-173707984.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"OU football fires Ben Arbuckle in second season as Sooners' OC, per reports","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/ou-football-fires-ben-arbuckle-173111581.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Oklahoma Sooners fire offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/oklahoma-sooners-fire-offensive-coordinator-174425185.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Oklahoma Sooners to move on from OC Ben Arbuckle per reports","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/oklahoma-sooners-move-oc-ben-175029732.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Oklahoma reportedly fires offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle amid disappointing 4-4 record","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/college-football/article/oklahoma-reportedly-fires-offensive-coordinator-ben-arbuckle-amid-disappointing-4-4-record-175054418.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Oklahoma fires offensive coordinator after Saturday’s South Carolina loss","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/oklahoma-fires-offensive-coordinator-saturday-181316264.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"OU football fans wanted Ben Arbuckle gone.
