Coach Kyle Whittingham said Tommy Carr will start this weekend against rival Michigan State and \"for the foreseeable future, unless something changes.\"\n\nCarr took over for Bryce Underwood last month and has only strengthened his hold on the job since. His performance at Rutgers was the best game of his career, and by Whittingham's reckoning one of the better outings by a Michigan quarterback over the past three seasons. Carr completed 22 of 27 passes, good for 81.4 percent.\n\nWhittingham said the decision was close to automatic given how well Carr played, though he noted the coaching staff had not yet gone through its full Monday review with the team since players had Sunday off. Michigan, now 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the Big Ten, hosts Michigan State, which sits at 2-6 and 0-5, on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. on Peacock.\n\nThe matchup carries rivalry weight regardless of either team's record, and Michigan now enters it with clarity at the position that has shifted during the season. For Michigan State, the game offers a chance to salvage something from a difficult conference stretch.","published_at":"2026-11-02T23:20:46.962309+00:00","source_count":4,"written_from":[{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Kyle Whittingham says Michigan will start Tommy Carr at QB for 'foreseeable future'","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7747783/2026/11/02/michigan-starting-qb-tommy-carr-bryce-underwood/"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Michigan football sticking with Tommy Carr at QB 'for foreseeable future'","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/michigan-football-sticking-tommy-carr-160706427.html"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Michigan QB Carr to be starter for 'foreseeable future,' Whittingham says","url":"https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/50358755/michigan-names-carr-starting-qb-foreseeable-future"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Kyle Whittingham says Tommy Carr is Michigan's starting QB for Michigan State game, 'forseeable future'","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/college-football/article/kyle-whittingham-says-tommy-carr-is-michigans-starting-qb-for-michigan-state-game-forseeable-future-153544878.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Michigan football sticking with Tommy Carr at QB 'for foreseeable future'","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/michigan-football-sticking-tommy-carr-160706706.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Michigan names Tommy Carr starting QB in advance of game for 1st time for Michigan State matchup","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/michigan-names-tommy-carr-starting-165727373.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Kyle Whittingham names Tommy Carr Michigan's starting QB going forward","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/kyle-whittingham-names-tommy-carr-173658721.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Michigan names Tommy Carr starting QB in advance of game for 1st time for Michigan State matchup","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/michigan-names-tommy-carr-starting-175350440.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Michigan QB update: Tommy Carr named starter 'for foreseeable future'","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/michigan-qb-tommy-carr-named-174323988.html"},{"outlet":"Fox Sports","publisher":"Fox Sports","title":"Michigan Names Starting QB For Michigan State Game And 'Foreseeable Future'","url":"https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-football/michigan-wolverines-tommy-car-qb-bryce-underwood"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"‘He’d be the best quarterback in the country’: Michigan announces quarterback decision for ‘foreseeable future’","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/d-best-quarterback-country-michigan-184458281.html"}],"image":null,"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
