On Sunday he did more than just show up: the Swedish half-marathon star won the men's race in his debut at the 26.2-mile distance, finishing in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 1 second, the third-fastest time in the race's history.\n\nYemaneberhan Crippa of Italy, also making his New York debut, finished second, 13 seconds behind. Almgren said the win had been part of a long-term plan he started thinking through while watching the race from Brooklyn around Mile 8 last year. \"Started talking about plans, my long-term plans, in my mind I thought it was a good plan,\" he said. \"Here we are a year later and I won this race.\"\n\nIn the women's race, Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya reclaimed the title in a duel of past champions, pulling away from countrywoman Hellen Obiri in the final 150 meters. It was Chepkirui's second New York City Marathon win.","published_at":"2026-11-01T23:19:04.454051+00:00","source_count":3,"written_from":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Andreas Almgren wins the New York City Marathon in his debut at the distance","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/andreas-almgren-wins-york-city-181415882.html"},{"outlet":"The Athletic","publisher":"The Athletic","title":"Andreas Almgren wins in New York City Marathon debut; Sheila Chepkirui reclaims title","url":"https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7744275/2026/11/01/nyc-marathon-2026-results-andreas-almgren-sheila-chepkirui/"},{"outlet":"ESPN","publisher":"ESPN","title":"Chepkirui takes duel of past champs, Almgren wins debut at NYC Marathon","url":"https://www.espn.com/olympics/trackandfield/story/_/id/50348440/sheila-chepkirui-andreas-almgren-claim-nyc-marathon-wins"}],"more_coverage":[{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"NYC Marathon 2026: Start times, how to watch, route and what to know","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/nyc-marathon-2026-start-times-100642530.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"2026 NYC Marathon: Andreas Almgren wins marathon debut, Sheila Chepkirui captures another win on women's side","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/article/2026-nyc-marathon-andreas-almgren-wins-marathon-debut-sheila-chepkirui-captures-another-win-on-womens-side-162134477.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"New York City Marathon: Andreas Almgren, Sheila Chepkirui win; Jess McClain ends U.S. podium drought","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/york-city-marathon-andreas-almgren-161302522.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"New York City Marathon 2026 results and times as Andreas Almgren triumphs in impressive debut","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/york-city-marathon-2026-results-162826825.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Almgren wins in NY on marathon debut, Chepkirui first in women's race","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/almgren-wins-ny-marathon-debut-171822980.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"Almgren wins in New York on marathon debut","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/almgren-wins-york-marathon-debut-181015760.html"},{"outlet":"Yahoo Sports","publisher":"Yahoo Sports","title":"2026 TCS New York City Marathon: Andreas Almgren wins men's race, Sheila Chepkirui wins women's race","url":"https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/2026-tcs-york-city-marathon-222530985.html"}],"image":null,"embed":null,"license":"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/","attribution":"Analysis data is licensed CC BY 4.0.
