Big 12 officials reverse call, gift BYU a touchdown against Arizona State

A fumble ruled dead for forward progress became a Sione Moa touchdown after a second video review, leaving the Fox broadcast crew baffled and Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham fuming.

BYU took a 7-0 lead over Arizona State on Saturday thanks to a replay decision nobody on the broadcast could fully explain. On second and goal from the one-yard line, quarterback Bear Bachmeier fumbled on a sneak attempt. Officials initially ruled his forward progress had been stopped, ending the play and giving BYU the ball at the one-yard line.

Then the Big 12's replay review center got involved. After a second look, officials overturned the original call, crediting running back Sione Moa with recovering the loose ball and rolling into the end zone for a touchdown. The call stood, and BYU led 7-0.

Fox's broadcast team of Connor Onion and Robert Griffin III turned to rules analyst Mike Pereira for an explanation, and even he seemed stumped. Pereira noted this wasn't a case where a runner stepping out of bounds gets continuing action, since the ball had already been recovered by a different player. Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham was visibly frustrated by the reversal, which came after BYU's loss to UCF the previous week. The sequence added to a string of head-scratching officiating moments involving Big 12 review crews this season.
